Sunderland boss Steve Bruce slammed his defence as ‘amateurish’ yesterday, after his side’s disappointing loss at the hands of Mark Hughes‘ Fulham.
Sunderland have suffered a terrible run of form of late, after a start to the season that had looked promising for the club. They entered the match having lost four of their last five matches, and will have hoped to turn things around against the Cottagers.
However, the side were blighted with injury problems, and have struggled up front since the departure of English hitman Darren Bent, who signed with Aston Villa in the January transfer window. Bruce was forced to place midfielder Sessegnon up front for the start of the match, and towards the end even placed defender Nessen Onouha in the goalscoring position.
Despite the lack of goals, it was the defence that Bruce was most disappointed with, after Fulham slotted 3 goals past the home side.
“At times some our defending was amateurish,” said the Sunderland boss yesterday.
“The defending today was not good enough at this level and when you give away goals like we did today against Fulham it turns into a frustrating day.
“We’ve just got to take the flak that comes our way and make sure we’re better next week at Bolton.”
Mark Hughes was delighted to see his team take all three points in an encounter which was only the second away win for the club in the league all season, and expressed pleasure at the performance of Swiss international Senderos.
His praise of the team performance was muted, despite the good result, as he commented: “We weren’t as good as in our previous two matches but we got the job done”.
“The first half, although we got the lead, we could have played better than we did; the second we took the game away from Sunderland.”
The loss puts struggling Sunderland in 14th place, being the 14th loss for the club this season.
